         “Gut microbiome - moving from association to causation and therapy”

                   By: Dr. Bernd Schnabl, MD, Professor of Medicine in Gastroenterology at UCSD School of Medicine

Dr. Bernd Schnabl

Dr. Schnabl received his MD degree from the University Freiburg in Germany and completed a gastroenterology fellowship at Columbia University. He is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at UCSD. He is also staff physician and attending at the VA San Diego Medical Center in La Jolla and the UCSD Medical Center. As a physician scientist, he is interested in learning about the contribution of the gut microbiome to the onset and progression of liver diseases. Using system biology approaches, his lab is trying to better understand the interaction between the intestinal microbiome and the liver during chronic liver disease.

Dr. Schnabl has published extensively in highly-regarded journals and has authored multiple reviews and book chapters. He is the principal investigator of a VA Merit Award, several NIH, foundation and industry-sponsored grants. Dr. Schnabl served as Associate Editor for Digestive Diseases and Sciences, which is the oldest continuously published GI journal in North America. He is also the Director of the NIH-funded San Diego Digestive Disease Research Center.
